Bhairavi took the flight from Punjab to Tamil Nadu. There had been surge in covid cases recently. She was excited for the opportunity to travel, still there was also worry lurking at the back of her mind to avoid catching infection and successfully completing her training.
And that is what the human mind does best; invite worry to sabotage the happiness which exists in now. Training was fun, experience oriented and building connections as a group. A group together can be powerful force to help each member connect more deeply within while making connections with others. It offers perfect setting for the opportune time to share our story and take a step back to let others do their sharing. Group was emerging stronger everyday from the first day of very little trust, anxiety and apprehension. As the days went by group members became relaxed and more open.
Bhairavi was staying in a friend’s house who lives abroad. She had a big house with kitchen equipped to do small experiments of cooking. She decided to cook her meals herself and the experiment was to cook without oil and spices. And she was managing well. Days were flying with evenings filled with eating with friends and buying local dresses to be more integrated.
It was the last day and she had to handover the keys of house in the morning to reach airport directly after the training. She ate her breakfast and packed lunch. Group decided to have lunch outside They went to a very contemporary and loud place. Bhairavi and another member ordered their lunch in sharing. They were talking, eating and enjoying and Bhairavi said,” I can eat everything and anything in vegetarian choices. It was a very casual statement but little she knew its impact on another group member.
They finished the lunch went back to training when the same group member burst into tears and shared her hurt about Bhairavi being able to eat everything and anything. Nishtha had a condition which made her body intolerant to certain foods. She said I want to be included in the group and not be someone who had eating restrictions. These restrictions make her feel left out, excluded and lonely.
Bhairavi felt her pain and hugged her and shared her chosen restrictions of no fat and no spices cooking for 10 days. The sharing and hug eased Nishtha’s discomfort and she became relaxed. In the evening Bhairavi gave Nishtha her lunch she had prepared in morning to eat during flight. Nishtha was touched and hugged her.
Food has deep roots within us. Our first introduction to world of food and emotions is through mother’s milk. The safety, security we feel while we are fed form the deep connection and we carry them within us. these connections give birth to our inner stories and to our relationship with food.
Bhairavi felt gratitude for the crucial learning and was once again convinced that food and emotions need mindful and compassionate approach. But what was Bhairavi’s story within?
